Why this blog?

Fritz Stehwien, German-Canadian artist extraordinaire, painted and sketched an estimated 10,000 works in his lifetime*.

Since his passing in 2008, at the age of nearly 94, it has become a labour of love to get a better 'picture' of these many, many works and to better get to know the artist and his many journeys.

Because it is such an enormous job to document all there is to know and see, this blog is one means to make the task more interesting. Instead of quietly working towards a goal such as a publication or exhibit, why not let the project be a journey in itself.

Paintings, pictures and stories will be added when time permits, as the blog and documentation of this phenomenal gallery of works progresses.

*Calculation is based on what seems like a very conservative estimate of 2 to 3 paintings or sketches per week over the course of 80 productive years. Give or take.

2.5 per week x 52 weeks x 80 years = 10,400 works!
